My Design Projects

I spent most of my academic career studying some area of design, whether that be user experience, engineering, graphics or prototyping. My years at college especially gave me a real passion or design. Unfortunately I am not currently working in design, so I have not been able to use my skills on a regular basis.

Part of my reasoning for opening this site was so I could explore some of my old projects, giving them further thought and development, and maybe even start some new design projects in my spare time.

I am going to be using this page as a hub for all of my design pieces, starting with my past projects, including all of my developments and work processes so you can keep up with the journey from beginning to end.

Check out my projects so far with an overview below. Individual extended posts will be added when completed.

College Year One Final Project – Table Light Sculptures

This project started with some experiments with wire work and developed into a practical table light design. The bases were designed to have a sturdy foundation while also having the space to house electronics for the light fitting. The lamp shades design was meant to practically support a shade around the wire frame, whilst also possibly using the frame to cast a shadow if a translucent outer casing was fitted.

College Year Two Final Project – Hand Made Spiral Table

My final project for college was a very broad task where we were given almost total free rein. Unbelievably this design started out with me analysing a lobster tail, which I am sure you are aware looks nothing like a table. The final design was made of equilateral triangles, decreasing in size at a steady rate to create a downward spiral effect, creating an optical illusion when you look down through the tables clear glass top. The wood on the side facing panels of wood was singed with a blow torch to create the scorched brown edge.

University Year One – Burberry Design Project

One of my university projects involved us pulling a brand randomly out of a hat, and then again randomly selecting the product we were going to be designing. When I drew a cutlery set in the style of Burberry I was worried at first. A cutlery set in the style of a clothing brand sounds absurd. The final design is therefore one I was quite happy with the set was cut entirely from stainless steel, with a sleek one piece design. The traditional Burberry checks and the easily identifiable collar were incorporated into the design in a minimalist way that enabled the set to still be functionable and hygienic. Each piece has a slightly separate design like most cutlery sets, as each unit needs to be comfortable to use when held.

University Year One – Sustainable Packaging Project

We were given a brief by a student run company on campus to design an improved packaging for their bicycle delivered hot takeaway boxes. Each container had to be able to fit a specified portion size, and be recyclable or reusable. Because they were using a Deliveroo style backpack for their delivery drivers, I went for a square design to make a more efficient use of the space available, and added a locking feature to the lid to enable purchases for the same order to be combined and transported together. The material used was a simple, rigid card, that on the inside had a special coating that stopped oil from seeping into the card, making sure it could still be recycled.

College Workshop Project

Alongside my studies in college we were tasked with designing a range of items to sell at local markets to help fund our studies. This started very early within my studies so the design I ended up with was rather simple, though I believe the subject that was chosen is one with potential. The print was made using a standard sized mug template that would wrap around the outside, with one copy of the design on each side. The design was then printed using a mug press onto the outside.

These are the main past projects I would like to explore further and develop. If I can find a cost effective way it would be great to be able to progress them to a stage where I could produce a working prototype and maybe even the ability to sell some of them.

That would be a dream come true.
